On March 29th, 2017 Dr. Marc Siegel discussed the dangerous effects stemming from the over-prescription of opioids. Siegel says that instead of referring patients to other medical professionals who can provide long-term care and solutions, primary care physicians turn to blanketing the problem with the use of these drugs. This is causing what is now being referred to the “Opioid Epidemic”. In the segment, Siegel was asked, if alternatives were available to the population which struggles with back pain. In his response, Siegel highlights chiropractic care as a safer approach than prescription painkillers for managing pain:
“Absolutely…there’s physical therapy, there’s heat, there’s chiropractic…[spinal] manipulations. There are so many different ways to approach this before you get to opioids…and opioids don’t even work for this; they just mask the symptoms!”
